i like making spaces....
creating a sense of home in a unique way.
i've never really created a unique space outdoors.
i've relied on other people for that in the past.

this was another barrier to move past: PLANTS.
i have labeled myself as a person who can't keep plants alive.
i bought these succulents a few weeks ago and have been scared to re-pot them and give them their own place. well..... faced the fear and did it. i'm scared i will wake up one morning to completely dead plants. but hey. trying!

shannon

these feel like fresh air to me.
i decided to clear everything off of those shelves and make it new.
they're hand-made by my friend gretchen!
ceramic genius.
you blog about me so much it seems.... I gotta update my site man.
(05.17.10 @ 03:36 PM)lehu, i like that you noticed the knee bend. was wondering if anyone would. :) :) :)
(05.19.10 @ 11:06 AM)

dont worry though the birdseed is only a treat. he eats better than most humans.
I'm totally all for feeding animals REAL food. I do it with my dog. I mean they're carnivores for goodness sake! No more of that carb-y dry food for this pup!
(04.22.10 @ 07:42 PM)hi hun! well, i grabbed a photo off your site for my tumblr because i loved it so much...and apparently the rest of the world loved it too! heh.

this morning i decided to have him come eat at the table with me. i was so enthralled that i forgot to eat my own food and do my morning pages. i took photos of him instead. by the time i got to my coffee and oatmeal it was cold. not an issue though, because LOOK AT THESE----------

today has been a good day,
yesterday all he wanted to do was bite me and hiss at me.
no clue what i did that made him so protective of his space.
but hey.
i'm learning to give him space when he needs it,
which is often.
so much seems to be going on in that teensy little head of his.
and i've realized lately that cosmo has many many fans.
you guys are loving him.
you want more photos of him.
you facebook stalk him--- via me.
i love this.
he's worth stalking.
so, continue.
glad to give you a little ammo today,
shan :)
Hi, Shannon! I love your work. Do you have a formspring page? I have some questions I'd love to ask you!
(04.06.10 @ 02:44 PM)no formspring, but go ahead and ask :)
and, fyi: your blog is lovely
You two make an interesting couple, SL. If I were your bird I wood bee afraid of getting to close and find myself in your stomach.
(04.06.10 @ 06:34 PM)SHANNON.. I LOOOVE YOUR COSMO... GROWING UP MY WHOLE ENTIRE CHILDHOOD I ALWAYS HAD A COCKATIEL... I LAHLAHLOVE THE PICS OF COSMO WITH FOOD ON HIS BEAK... SOOOOO SWEET.... ;)
(04.24.10 @ 07:55 PM)
so, here's my perspective on the most beautiful flowers alive: ranunculus.
HARD TO SPELL.
often times for me blogging is a way of taking a deep breath in and a deep breath out.
i love it.
and i love how the images make a diagonal line, left to right.
see it?
breathtaking! you are so good! And tall. Adam told me to add that :-)
(03.24.10 @ 11:36 PM)oh, I've been craving ranunculuses (not to eat -- to gaze upon).. thank you for these.
(03.25.10 @ 06:19 AM)It has been really clear these last few weeks that you've been shooting for yourself... the work looks more mature and better developed than in the past - GOOD JOB, KEEP BEING TALL :)
(03.25.10 @ 07:26 AM)It makes me very happy when your site pops up in my google reader. I always enjoy your photographs very much, and as someone who is learning her camera - i study your photos and aspire to be as good with my camera. Thank you!
(03.25.10 @ 08:20 AM)hi! i finished the artist's way a couple of months ago and was excited to read about your experience with it. i tell everyone i know about it - wasn't it an amazing experience? for me, i learned how to self-nurture above all else. love your blog, photographs, and your unique, lovely voice, by the way. :) thanks for sharing!!
(04.02.10 @ 05:38 PM)
i now like pets.
i used to hate them.
yes, i'll go that far.
i will give myself a bit of an excuse:
i'm an allergic person who has lots of sensitivity to fur etc.
but.... still.
my heart isn't really there when it comes to petting a dog or thinking a kitten is cute.
sorry!
but........
my heart has had a shift.
i love my bird.
never knew this was possible:
love for an animal.
most of you will now be thinking i'm nuts,
but its just the truth.
i try not to tell many people because if you don't like someone's pet, offensive!
so anyway,
cosmo has been sitting on the same perch for about 4 days straight..... he's freaked out.
and today when i tried to give him a spray-bottle shower he flipped out and kind of hopped/flew out of his cage.
probably out of utter fear,
but hey.
he stayed out for half an hour!
we're making progress.
he's still a little timid.
accept and receive.

this is so weird.
loving an animal.
It's ok, Shan. People everywhere, all over, love pets. It's not weird. I am thinking about getting a pygmy goat and loving it to death. Now that is weird!
(03.12.10 @ 02:55 PM)as much as I don't like birds... I think he might be the cutest bird I've ever seen.
(03.12.10 @ 10:58 PM)I don't have very deep feelings for dogs, but cat's are great! I also love canaries - your bird is the best kind for you. Enjoy loving him/her??? which?? love ya, gr ma
(03.13.10 @ 10:14 AM)Hi again, Shannon....I read your news about Cosmo and see that he is a he! You have a "he" in your life now....gr ma
(03.13.10 @ 10:16 AM)Another thing we have in common- our (past) hatred for pets. I am still not completely out of the dark when it comes to LOVING furry thangs, but I trust I will follow in your footsteps...
For example- the last photo of Cosmo make me want to get a bird and cuddle with it..WHAT? I now, love Cosmo too.
(03.13.10 @ 10:16 AM)shannon! i feel the SAME way about pets! and i'm TOTALLY an allergic person, too.
(03.13.10 @ 12:54 PM)Silly human. I was reaching for the camera. Next, I will let you think you've won my affections by standing in your hand. We'll see who, "Can't hold the flash."
(03.15.10 @ 02:05 PM)
can't help it!

so many serendipitous things happened today as i prepped my life for my new bird.
i'm naming him cosmo, and i realized i was wearing my favorite griffith observatory shirt.
norah jones' light as a feather song was playingas the people rang my doorbell to bring him over...
and i guess those are the only two things.
but!
to me, big deal.
i put the cage together at 7am this morning,
they basically provided one little diagram drawing with lots of arrows. very complicated. my roommate shaina took this photo----- it felt like prepping the nursery for a new baby. ha!

i have had quite a few people tell me this cage is too big. lets just say this: would you want to live in a teeny little box if you were cosmo? ditto. that's why i got him a giant one. and.... i since i work from home, by myself, he is now like my co-worker. i want him to be happy. and this is my first pet. gotta go big.

I just left a comment on your facebook, but I had to come see the blog since the pictures are bigger over here. Cosmo is such a handsome fellow! I love the palace of a cage you built for him!
(03.07.10 @ 02:12 PM)the bird cage is perfect.
Cosmo is perfect.
LOVE it, can't wait to meet him!
(03.07.10 @ 02:18 PM)YES, and....I hope friends.
I also hope we can be friends and heal together.
The end.
(03.07.10 @ 03:17 PM)eeeek! he's here! i think it would be appropriate to forward these pictures of you painstakingly pouring over cage-building instructions to the people at the bird school. it would be like, "look, see. i'm doin this!"
and i agree with your cage philosophy, which i also apply to many facets of life: go big or go home.
congrats!
(03.07.10 @ 10:32 PM)hello cosmo! how insanely lovely you are ;) ! and as always, inspiring pictures shannon!
j.
Cosmo is so adorable! The last photo is especially precious. I love little coincidences or winks from the universe as I like to think of them ;) We had a cockatiel named Peaches for many years, and now my mom has Margaret. They're sweet little birds. Enjoy!
(03.08.10 @ 11:33 AM)My cage is awesome!!! But what's with all your other birds that don't have cages? I thought I was your favorite.
Oh, as your coworker, I insist - no - demand that I receive full medical coverage. There's a great chance I'm allergic to you, so I'll need to be visiting the vet a lot.
Check it out, I'm typing.
He's Beautiful!!
(03.08.10 @ 10:49 PM)cosmo is goooooorgeoues!! soo happy for u shannon! XO Maren
(03.10.10 @ 04:07 PM)What a handsome fellow he is! Can't wait to meet him!
(03.11.10 @ 05:03 PM)so happy for you. lovin the photos. and yes, i agree on the large cage. much like we have a quarter acre for our 10 POUND dog. ;)
(03.25.10 @ 01:48 PM)

(06.01.10 @ 09:54 PM)I wish I had come... but you look lovely in your new summer frock!
(06.01.10 @ 10:25 PM)i love your jars/containers for your plants. They bring so much more to them.
(06.01.10 @ 11:40 PM)love it all. :]
